For Only the Second Time in The History of the Tournament, The American Team Claims the Title of Planet's Best Gaming Nation

(Press Release)- Team USA shocked the rest of the world as it won the overall team title at the World Cyber Games Grand Final in Seattle. Competing against more than 700 gamers from a record 74 countries, the United States overcame the stiffest competition in World Cyber Games history to capture the gold. It is the United States second team title and first since the 2005 WCG Grand Final in Singapore. In claiming the title, the Americans won three gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze medal in 12 PC and Xbox 360 titles. Korea and Brazil each earned two gold medals while Germany had one gold, one silver and three bronze. The result was a huge disappointment for the heavily favored and defending world champion Korean team who have dominated professional gaming since its inception.

"Our goal was to capture the overall team title," said Michael Arzt, General Manager of International Cyber Marketing USA. "With the Grand Final on our home soil, we wanted to prove that we are as good as the Koreans, Germans and the other dominant Asian and European teams. I knew that we had put together a very talented team that had the potential to medal in every game in which we had a qualifier and they really stepped up to the plate this weekend. "

Team USA captured gold medals in Tony Hawk Project 8, Gears of War, and Dead Or Alive 4 (DOA 4). In Tony Hawk, Dustin Valcalda (Reno, NV) bowled over the competition as he never lost a game during the entire event. Participating in his first professional tournament, Valcada defeated England in the finals and the Czech Republic in the semis. The Gears of War team -- including Keith Haggen (Phoenix), Jesse Cranker (Bowling Green, OH), Michael Cannon (Harrisburg, PA), and Jesse Rodriguez (Chicago) -- also experienced little difficulty in rolling to the gold medal. They defeated The Netherlands 2-0 in the gold medal match. In DOA 4, Jeremy Florence (Albuquerque, NM) also never lost during the competition in coasting to the title. Florence overcame American teammate and bronze medalist Carl White (Toledo, OH) in the semifinals as he avenged his loss to White during the National Championships last month in Orlando, FL. In the gold medal match, he dominated Sweden, 2-0.

Wes Cwiklo (Camarillo, CA) and Ragav Phadke (Buffalo, NY) each earned silver medals for the Americans. The defending 2006 WCG Grand Final world champion in Project Gotham Racing 3, Cwiklo dominated in his first eight matches before he was upset in the gold medal match against The Netherlands. Phadke, meanwhile, came out of nowhere to compete at a world-class level in the Age of Empires III tournament, a game typically dominated by the Asian countries.

Extending Our Reach conference registration begins mid-July; New youth TV campaign to be unveiled The under-development 2007 youth prevention television campaign is scheduled to be unveiled during a “Sneak Preview” event at the Tobacco Program’s conference in September.

The Extending Our Reach conference, September 24-26 at the SeaTac Marriott, will also feature Cheryl Healton, CEO of the American Legacy Foundation, delivering a keynote address, and 18 workshops and trainings presented by experts from around the state and the nation.

The first day of the conference will be devoted to contractor trainings on topics such as relation-ship building, tribal policy, and evaluating community programs.

The second day of the conference will feature Healton, Secretary of Health Mary Selecky pre-senting the Selecky Awards, 12 workshops, and the “Sneak Preview” event at 5:30 p.m. The movie-themed event will include popcorn, peanuts and Cracker Jacks in addition to heartier fare that could substitute for dinner.

The final day of the conference includes a seminar on the CDC’s updated tobacco best practices and a special presentation on leadership and innovation by Sam Magill, a highly acclaimed con-sultant and speaker from the Seattle area.

A ‘Katalyst’ For Change

Kirby Grey uses beats, rhymes and hip hop shows as a catalyst for positive change in her community. Aa Solid Ground JustServe AmeriCorps member, Kirby serves this year as Prevention Program Coordinator for the Washington Asian Pacific Islander Families Against Substance Aabuse (WAPIFASA).

She’s teamed up with red hot local hip hop artists from the Mass Line label to create the Katalyst Pproject — training youth in the Hip Hop arts as a meaningful alternative to violence and stagnation through personal expression.

Kirby came to WAPIFASA through Solid Ground’s JustServe AmeriCorps program. A recent graduate of Seattle University, she was active in a number of student organizations there.

“But I felt like I was really disconnected from the community as a whole,” she says. “In the end I didn’t see how being connected to the school community could help me in the future. My goal is to be connected to the community that I am a part of and to work in that community.”

Kirby learned about WAPIFASA from her college advisor, who served on its board. Well known in the API community since 1990 for their counseling and treatment programs, the agency sought to launch a substance abuse prevention effort as well. They were in the process of applying for a JustServe member to launch the project and found Kirby’s skill set, interest in youth and immersion in hip hop culture to be a perfect fit.

“Without Kirby we would not have been able to do a lot of the programs we are doing this year,” says Greg Garcia, WAPIFASA’s Executive Director. “JustServe has meant everything to help us get this program started.” For most of her AmeriCorps year, Kirby has worked part time while completing her theology degree.

She oversees the Youth Lounge/Leadership Council drop-in program as well as the innovative Katalyst Project, funded by a City of Seattle arts grant.

“Kirby connected us to Mass Line,” Greg says. “She provided a lot of energy to our youth and built good relationships with the Leadership Council. I see our youth being more interested in the community. They used to just hang around, make graffiti. Now they are going to protests, working on videos and getting engaged.” Read More

Photographers become multimedia news producers | TheNewsTribune.com | Tacoma, WA: "There’s a revolution going on in the way America’s newspaper news-rooms do visual storytelling. For most of my time in the business the heart of our visuals has been still photography. In the past two decades, the introduction of increasingly sophisticated print and online graphics has enhanced and altered how we tell stories.

Now it’s online video that is changing everything. We’re interviewing finalists for a photography opening on our staff. We had more than 200 applications and have boiled the list down to half a dozen. A key element is how versatile they are.

They must be world-class still photographers, skilled at composing dramatic and telling images on the fly and processing them with the latest software.

But we’re also seeking photographers who can record sound and build captivating online photo galleries that have compelling narration and “live” sound.

And they need to be able to shoot and edit video."

AP Ending Its "asap" Service in October: "NEW YORK The Associated Press will be ending its highly-touted 'asap' service in October, E&P has learned. Staffers were notified this morning about its October 31 demise as a stand alone. It's not known if any layoffs will come. About 200 newspapers subscribed to the service. It was launched in 2005 as a response to the growth of blogs and so-called youth tabs, and had 24 staff members. It offers a variety of packages and reports (including a lot of video and photo galleries) targeting a younger and/or quirkier audience than the standard AP report. Elements of the service will be incorporated into the regular AP report. ASAP Editor Ted Anthony declined to say why the product was being disbanded, but said part of the reason was an effort to take the approach and weave it more within other AP services."
